Course Descriptions:
Auto Mechanics: age 10 - senior citizen
Learn the fundamentals of the automotive engine, disassemble and reassemble a V-8 engine.
Birthday Party Wood Turning: age 6 - 12
Let your birthday have a special meaning for you and your guests. Have them learn safe practical use
of the Jet Mini-Lathe, while everyone makes a useful writing pen.
Cutting Boards and Clocks: age 6 - 12
This class lets you use the basic machines of woodworking to construct a beautiful laminated cutting board,
and a laminated clock. The safe use of band saw, planer, drill press, shaper, and sanders. Gluing, scraping,
sanding, and finishing will be included.
Electricity and Electronics: age 8 - 14
Learn basics of electricity and electronics, such as atomic theory, production of electricity, component parts,
soldering, and circuits. A project is built that will be fun to use; "Snap-Kit" expermentation also.
Elementary Woodshop (hand tools): age 6 - 10
Imagine making "elk and hail proof" flowers and planters; you will learn safe and correct use of the basic hand
wood tools, such as layout tools, hand saws, files, and more. Also learn about sanding and finishing your
projects; mostly made of redwood, cedar, and pine. Projects also include bird houses, feeders, and more.
Power Mechanics: age 6 - senior citizen
Most students can take apart anything, but some have trouble putting it back together. In this class you wil learn the safe operation and systems of internal combustion engines. Along with some history of engines you will be able to take apart a small 3 hp engine and actually get it back together and hopefully make it run. Running your engine is the highlight of this class.
Woodshop (machine tools): age 8 - senior citizen
This is the machine class of woodworking; including safe use of all the wood machine tools to build moderate
to difficult projects, such as workbenches, lawn chairs, and the like.
Welding: age 7 - senior citizen
A lot of fun here; learning safe use of welders. Class will provide instruction on: gas welding, gas cutting, mig
welding, as well as soldering and brazing. This class is outside; so it is weather permitting.
Wood Turning: age 6 - senior citizen
The flagship class of the "Workshops in the Woods" program, this class provides safe instruction on the
use of the Jet Mini-Lathe. The classes start by learning to make a pen out of "Trex" decking material, then
proceeding to wood, then plastic; the most difficult material in following classes. Progression then occurs to more difficult spindle turning, then to faceplate turning making wooden bowls. Wood turning can go on in difficulty and values. I have met a guy who sold a turned pen for $1500.00; so "wood turning" can be endless.
